Last night Alma and I celebrated our 8th anniversary a week early by going to the swankiest restaurant we have ever been to-- Tru. 2 years ago our friends got a gift certificate to go and enjoy dessert. Now it had to be dessert only because to eat dinner there is like $145/person. (no, that is not a typo) It is jacket required, which did intimidate us a little. Not like we are country bumpkins who don't know how to use utensils, but we are not used to "privileged dining" either.
From the moment you walk in (sorry no pictures, we did not want to appear like the above stated country bumpkins) the service was incredible. My coat was removed and whisked away (and brought back at departure just as quickly), and we had our pick of tables in the lounge area (main dining room dessert wasn't served until after 10pm and we didn't want to wait until that late). The decor was simple and elegant. Everyone was helpful and nice. We ordered 2 desserts to share... caramelized banana and peanut butter crepes, served with peanut butter curry ice cream and a spicy nut praline, and hot chocolate souffle with cinnamon ice cream, pistachio brittle and marshmallow brulee.
In addition to what we ordered they also brought us a beginning melon drink to cleanse our pallets, a small sweet bread course, and an after dessert- dessert sampler with cookies from origins all over the world. There was synchronized plate handling, a full description of every dish, and always the question of "can we get you anything else?". Not something we can afford to do often, or would want to do often because the magic would probably fade too quickly. It was, to say the least, a very fun experience.
And now for the funny part. We were busy during the day and didn't get a chance to eat dinner before going. So after our very lovely 2 bite desserts, we ordered a burger and fries at a drive-thru. How do you like that juxtaposition?

getting dessert at tru sounds awesome, exactly what you would want to spend at a place that fancy and still have the experience... i love it! (and getting burgers and fries afterwards is soo something we would do).
If people want to see it, there's a virtual tour here:
